The Zuiderzee has been sea till 1932. This sea is closed with a 30 kilometer long dike called the "afsluit dijk" (the closing dike). The afsluitdijk is build from 1927 to 1932. The salt zuiderzee is now changed into a sweet water lake filled with sweet water from the river Ijsel, so the lake is now called Ijselmeer (lake ijsel). Big parts of the ijselmeer are surrounded with dikes and pumped dry in the years after closing, creating new land for the Netherlands. When cycling the zuiderzee route, you will find all the early zuiderzee dikes and old fishing-harbours, the afsluitdijk, the new land, and a lot of explainations about the history of the zuiderzee. Its a realy exiting cycling tour!
Visit the zuiderzee museum. You will pass it. Address is: Zijlweg 2 in Enkhuizen (N52 41.642 E5 16.817)
